
Pre-Solo Documents
Before an ECAC student pilot is able to complete their first solo flight, it is a mandatory requirement for them to complete a pre-solo stage check with a flight instructor other than their own to ensure their readiness and safety.
The Pre-Solo Stage Check Primer document provides information that you will need to know for the oral portion of the stage check. This information is critical for you to know not only for the stage check but also to operate safely as a solo student pilot in the airport and airspace environment
The stage check must be scheduled on the ECAC Aero Calendar ahead of time, with the assigned CFI who will conduct the stage check.
The assigned CFI will use conduct the stage check using the currently published Student Pilot Pre-Solo Stage Check Form.
The Student Pilot Pre-Solo Stage Check Form covers the required knowledge, areas of operations and flight proficiency required during the Pre-Solo stage check. Work through the document in order and check off the items listed as they are satisfactorily completed and make any notes of areas that you identify where additional training is recommended.
The stage check will proceed in the order:
Documentation
The student pilot must be in possession of:
- Logbook (with any required endorsements)
- Valid student pilot certificate.
- Valid government issued picture ID
- Valid / current medical certificate
- Pilot’s Operating Handbook for aircraft being flown
- FAA publications as required
Student completes the Emergency Quiz
The student is allowed 15 minutes to complete The Emergency Quiz will be reviewed and corrected before continuing with the stage check.
Ground Portion
Student and Instructor will complete the ground portion of the stage check using the Student Pilot Pre-Solo Stage Check Form
Aircraft Inspection:
The student pilot will conduct a thorough pre-flight inspection of the aircraft, following the approved checklist or the aircraft’s POH (Pilot’s Operating Handbook)
Flight Portion
The student pilot and Flight Instructor will complete the flight portion of the stage check using the Student Pilot Pre-Solo Stage Check Form
- Aircraft Startup Procedures
- Taxi
- Aircraft Run-up
- Takeoff and Depart to designated training area
- Complete list of required maneuvers and emergency procedures.
- Re-enter Class D airspace.
- Traffic Pattern work
- Landing
- Taxi to Parking
- Complete aircraft shutdown and securing procedures
Post Flight Portion
Post flight debrief and discussion.
Written Report to Director of Flight Standards and student’s CFI
