Checkride Experience Notes

A checkride experience notes (gouge) is a compilation of tips, notes, and insights gathered by pilots who have recently completed a checkride. Because the gouge is written by the pilot who has just completed their checkride the format and information contained within each gouge can vary. Typically it will cover

  • Personal Experiences: Detailed descriptions of what the checkride was like for previous candidates, including the demeanor of the examiner.
  • Checkride Sequence: A list of items covered and the order of the checkride from the initial meeting until the
  • Areas of Focus: Topics or maneuvers that examiners might emphasize or test more rigorously.
  • Questions Asked: Common questions examiners may ask during the oral portion of the checkride.
  • Advice: Practical tips for preparation, such as studying specific regulations, reviewing maneuvers, or understanding local airspace.
  • Pitfalls: Common mistakes to avoid, based on firsthand experiences.

Checkride gouges are often shared with instructors and among pilot communities, like flight schools, forums, or social media groups, and can help candidates prepare more effectively by providing a clearer understanding of what to expect.

While these gouges can be incredibly helpful, it’s important to use them as a supplement to comprehensive training and not as a substitute for mastering the knowledge and skills required to pass the checkride.

You should read up on the gouge for the Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) you are booked to test with.

Your CFI should have a collection of recent gouges – speak to your CFI – this is your best option to get a checkride gouge..
