Student Pilot Limitations

Student pilots at East Coast Aero Club are permitted to fly solo with the appropriate endorsements entered into their log books. As part of your endorsements for solo flight, the following limitations are placed upon the student pilot whenever flying solo.


ECAC Pilot Weather Minimums

ECAC Wind Limitations for all student pilots are:

  1. Maximum wind of 17 Kts
  2. Max cross wind of 7 Kts
  3. Max-Gusts not to exceed 5Kts

ECAC Ceilings and Visibilities

  1. Flying in the traffic pattern: 1,600′ AGL ceiling and P6SM or greater visibility
  2. Local practice area: 3,500′ AGL ceiling and P6SM or greater visibility
  3. Cross-country: 4,000′ AGL ceiling and P6SM or greater visibility at origin, along entire
    route of flight and at destination

Note: Instructors may limit their students to lower winds and higher ceilings and visibility for students.
If you wish for your limitation to be altered you must have your instructor agree to this and have the instructor enter these adjusted limitations in your logbook and have your instructor inform the ECAC office / dispatchers to enter them in the your student information file.


ECAC Pilot Runway Minimums

Except in the case of an emergency, ECAC pilots / members are permitted to land ECAC aircraft only on runways meeting the following criteria:

  • 3,000 feet or more in length and
  • Hard paved & improved (no grass or ice).

Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis. See the ECAC office staff for details.

Pilots take aircraft with wheel pants to grass fields at their own risk and are responsible for any damage.


Approved Airports

Except in the case of an emergency ECAC Student Pilots are not permitted to enter Class B airspace or land at a Class B airport (example: Boston Logan International).
